Gerhard Zimmer (archaeologist)

Gerhard Zimmer (born May 23, 1949 in Dillingen an der Donau ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Gerhard Zimmer studied Classical Philology , German Philology and Classical Archeology in Munich . He completed his studies with a teaching examination in Latin and Ancient Greek and with a doctorate from Paul Zanker on Roman professional representations . In 1978/79 he was able to travel to the Mediterranean region thanks to the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Between 1980 and 1985 he was involved in a project to research ancient bronze casting . In 1984 he became an employee of the Antikensammlung Berlin , later curator and finally deputy director. Zimmer completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin in 1988 with a thesis on Greek bronze casting workshops . At the Antikensammlung he participated in several important exhibitions such as Spiegelbilder (1987), Bürgerwelten (1993) and The Praying Boy . Initially, Zimmer held a teaching position at the Free University of Berlin, and from 1997 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From July 31, 1999 to September 2015, Gerhard Zimmer was Professor of Classical Archeology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt .

Zimmer is considered to be one of the most internationally recognized specialists in antique bronzes and their manufacture. In addition, the ancient terracotta belong to his areas of expertise. Following an interdisciplinary approach, Zimmer always draws on written ancient sources and the findings of ancient history on the history of culture and technology in his research .

For many years Zimmer was secretary of the Association of Friends of Antiquity on Museum Island Berlin eV and is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
