Gerhard von Hoßtrup

Gerhard von Hoßtrup also Gerhard Carsten Hoßtrupp or von Hosstrup , full name Gerhard Carsten Jakob von Hoßtrup (born April 23, 1771 in Hamburg ; † September 7, 1851 ) was the founder of the Hamburg stock exchange hall.

Life

Gerhard von Hoßtrup was the son of a school teacher (also: "wealthy private citizen") who had immigrated to Hamburg, probably named Carstens, who came from the Schleswig town of Hoßtrup. To avoid confusion, the latter added the addition "von Hoßtrup" to his name. Gerhard Hoßtrup limited the surname to the (non-noble) designation of origin of Hoßtrup. He studied in Heidelberg and joined the Corps Hanseatia Heidelberg there. In Hamburg he founded his own shop "Korn & von Hoßtrup" for manufactured and fashion goods, which he continued until 1812. His first marriage was Sophie Henriette Elisabeth (Betty) Seyler , after her death in 1837, her sister Luise Auguste, daughters of Ludwig Erdwin Seyler , which resulted in a close family relationship with the banking and patrician families Berenberg and Gossler .

As early as 1802 he had the building of the Hamburg stock exchange hall built by the builder Joseph Ramée from his own resources, which was opened in January 1804. The institute's own presses printed several magazines with political, mercantile and also fiction content, including the evening newspaper "List of the Börsenhalle" (1805).

The stock exchange hall in Hamburg, around 1804

With the relocation of the stock exchange to the Neue Börse in 1842, business went well, but the building , which has now become a Hamburg landmark, was destroyed in the great Hamburg fire . In 1843, Hoßtrupp became senior senior citizen in the college of mayor. He was a member of the Academic Club in Hamburg .

After his death in 1851, the management of the Börsenhalle remained in the hands of his sons Egmont and Gerhard Ludwig von Hoßtrup until July 1, 1852 . His daughter Bertha (1814–1902) was married to Albert Hänel .
