Gerhard von Vianden (* 12th century; † 1212 ) was the youngest son of Count Friedrich I. von Vianden . From 1184 to 1212 he was abbot of Prüm and from 1192 also abbot of the twin abbeys Stavelot - Malmedy .

Life

In 1187 Gerhard got in contact with Eriebald , Abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy, to renew the brotherhood between the Abbeys of Prüm and Stavelot-Malmedy. When Eriebald abdicated from his office in 1192, Gerhard was also elected abbot of these monasteries.

1190 founded Gerhard of Vianden with his sister Adelheid Countess of Mølbach the Benedictine - convent Niederprüm on lands that originally the county of Vianden heard and Abbey of Prüm. Other members of the Vianden count family, including Elisabeth Countess von Salm and Alveranda Countess von Molbach, donated land to the Niederprümer monastery in the following years. Gerhard himself became Vogt of Niederprüm.

Gerhard also consolidated the territory of the Prüm Abbey during his term of office by taking over lands with his nephew Count Friedrich III. von Vianden exchanged in the interests of both parties. So the bailiwick rights for Prüm and its immediate vicinity in about the old Carosgau came to the abbey. In return Vianden received as a fief the estates and castles Dasburg and Schönecken , the courtyards Mettendorf , Manderscheid and Oberweis in the reign Neuerburg and patronage rights over seven churches, including those of Bastogne . The Bailiwick of Schönecken , which remained under Vianden rule, was not affected by this exchange .

After the double election in 1198, Gerhard took the side of Otto IV of Braunschweig , but probably changed camps after 1205 and from then on supported like his nephew Friedrich III. the Hohenstaufen .
