Court organization (Portugal)
The Portuguese judicial organization has three levels.
The lowest level consists of the comarcas , the judicial districts of the first instance . Until the reform of the judicial system in 2014, there were 231 comarcas in Portugal. With the reform, they were combined into 23 new comarcas, which are mostly based on the borders of the districts in continental Portugal. The seat of the respective main court ( Grande Tribunal ) is in the district capital. The total of 311 existing dishes were subordinated to these 23 main dishes.
The 23 comarcas as local courts of first instance are divided into the five judicial districts of the mostly second instance higher regional courts:
- Lisbon Higher Regional Court ( Relação de Lisboa , with the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores )
- Higher Regional Court of Porto ( Relação do Porto )
- Higher Regional Court of Guimarães ( Relação de Guimarães )
- Higher Regional Court of Coimbra ( Relação de Coimbra )
- Higher Regional Court of Évora ( Relação de Évora , with the Algarve )
The higher regional courts are ultimately subordinate to the highest court, the Supremo Tribunal de Justiça .
Four courts exist side by side as the highest courts:
- Supremo Tribunal de Justiça (Supreme Court, see above)
- Supremo Tribunal Administrativo (Supreme Administrative Court), with its own spatial structure at administrative courts, the Tribunais Administrativos e Fiscais
- Tribunal de Contas (Supreme Court of Auditors)
- Tribunal Constitucional de Portugal (Constitutional Court)
