Gernand von Brandenburg (also Gerhard, Gerrand, Gernot ; † December 14, 1241 ) was Bishop of Brandenburg from 1222 to 1241 . He belonged to the Premonstratensian Order .

Life

The first documentary mention of Gernand von Brandenburg mentions him as the envoy of Magdeburg Archbishop Ludolf von Kroppenstedt on May 25, 1200 in Rome. His next visit to Rome was from February 25, 1202 to June 23, 1202. This time he is there as the emissary of the elect and later Archbishop Albrecht I von Käfernburg . At that time he was the canon of St. Nikolaus in Magdeburg . Due to a papal mandate to the archbishop of Magdeburg, he received a canonical in the cathedral chapter of Magdeburg. He is mentioned in a document as archdeacon , dated April 27, 1211. Soon afterwards he received the dean's office of the cathedral monastery. As dean , he is occupied from March 21, 1212 to November 9, 1221. With Archbishop Albrecht I, he set out for Italy at the end of September 1221 .

Gernand von Brandenburg became the next Bishop of Brandenburg after Siegfried II , since neither Ludolf von Schwanebeck nor Wichmann von Arnstein were confirmed by the Pope as Bishop of Brandenburg. After the Pope had conceded the conflicting elections of Wichmann von Arnstein and Ludolf von Schwanebeck by virtue of devolution right, he appointed Gernand Bishop of Brandenburg on May 17, 1222. He received his consecration from the Archbishop of Magdeburg Albrecht I in Alatri on May 29, 1222. He returned from Italy in the spring of 1224 and took over his diocese .

On October 1st, 1225, he was appointed by the papal legate Konrad to visit the monastery on Lauterberg .

The most important work by Gernand von Brandenburg during his pontificate was the settlement of the Brandenburg tithe dispute with the Margraves Johann I and Otto III. A comparison was made that was satisfactory for both parties, dated October 28, 1237.

According to Bothoni's chronicle, he was captured in 1239 by the Havelberg bishop Wilhelm von Havelberg . No further information is known about this event.

According to the Brandenburg bishop's chronicle, Gernand von Brandenburg died on December 14, 1241.

Gernand created the four-tower Marienkirche on the Harlunger Berge , which replaced a previous building. This church remained the defining building in Brandenburg until its ruins were cleared in 1722 and provided a home for a Premonstratensian canon monastery and the Swan Order founded in the 15th century .
