Gernot Winischhofer (* 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian violinist . He studied at the Vienna University of Music with Sándor Végh , among others , at the Mozarteum and took part in master classes with Max Rostal and Wolfgang Schneiderhan . Gernot Winischhofer received his diploma with distinction in 1982. A state scholarship enabled him to study for three years at the  Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow . He completed his studies under the successor David Oistrach Valeri Klimow , at the end he received a diploma with distinction. Gernot Winischhofer has been awarded several national and international prizes.

As a soloist he has performed with conductors such as Sergiu Commissiona,  Christian Thielemann and Saulius Sondeckis , as well as with orchestras such as the Philharmonic of the Hermitage St. Petersburg, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Slovak Philharmonic , the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Nuremberg Philharmonic , the SWF Philharmonic, Janáček and Martinů Philharmonic, the Vienna, Moscow, Lithuanian, Prague and Suk chamber orchestras and many others.

His solo appearances with orchestra took place at the Meran Festival 2003, in the Großer Festspielhaus in Salzburg , in the Wiener Musikverein and Wiener Konzerthaus , at the Prague Spring, the Budapest Spring, the Vienna Festival Weeks and Music Summer and the Carinthian Summer in Estoril. He performed chamber music and solo performances with, among others, Josef Suk , Igor Oistrach , Maurizio Barboro, Tatjana Grindenko, Rainer Honeck, Franz Bartolomey, Pavel Gililov.

Gernot Winischhofer founded the "Oistrachensemble" with Igor & Valery Oistrach, the Philharmonic Piano Quintet Vienna and the "Trio di Vienna". He is the artistic director of the Ost-West-Musikfest, which he founded in 1987. From 1992 to 2015 he taught violin as professor at the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna (formerly Conservatory Vienna Private University). In 2010 he founded the Camerata Vienna chamber orchestra there with his best students . The young musicians were formed by the conductor Saulius Sondeckis into an ensemble of young virtuosos who embody the special Viennese sound ideal.

His tours have taken him all over Europe, America and Asia. He made numerous radio, television and CD recordings and was the director of numerous master classes for children and young people in the USA, Japan, Korea and Moscow, among others. He plays a violin by Paolo Maggini from Brescia , the "Ole Bull", which was built around 1600.
