Gersdorfer Burg is a district of Quedlinburg located two kilometers to the south in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt and is at an altitude of 140 to 150 meters. The Gersdorfer Burg is registered in the Quedlinburg monument register and includes a medieval village complex that fell into desolation as early as the 13th century, a castle complex that was founded in the first half of the 12th century and younger farm buildings that have been used as an agricultural enterprise since 1756 .

North of the Gersdorfer Burg are the Seweckenberge on which the Seweckenwarte is located.

history

The villa Gerwigesthorp is located east of Quedlinburg below the Seweckenberge and was bequeathed to the Quedlinburg monastery in 961 ; it fell desolate as early as the 1260s.

Today only a keep is evidence of the medieval castle, which was probably built in the first half of the 12th century . There are assumptions that the castle was built in the 10th century and served as the ancestral seat of Count Thietmar, the father of Margrave Gero . It was a landed aristocracy - or for a time a count castle .

For the year 1155 a Buchardus de Gersthorp is named as feudal lord of the Quedlinburg monastery . Another mention comes from the year 1179. At that time, gentlemen von Gerstorp were sitting in a castle that belonged to the Quedlinburg women's monastery. In 1303 the castle was renovated by Count Gardun von Hadmersleben. Another mention as dat hus to gerstdorp comes from the year 1312.

In the course of a feud between Halberstadt Bishop Albrecht II and the Count of Regenstein in 1332, the Gersdorfer Burg office came to the Regenstein family. As a result of the ongoing disputes, the castle was destroyed in 1337, according to other sources, not until 1349 and returned to the bishop.

It then took place in 1349, according to other sources, it was not rebuilt until 1369 by Hinze von Dale. Various changes of ownership followed. The castle consisted of a fore and main castle and took up an area of about 130 by 100 meters.

In 1756, according to other sources, in 1755, the extensive castle grounds were redesigned as a forecourt. The castle was demolished except for the keep and the stones were used to erect the farm buildings. Elongated residential buildings, parts of the enclosure and younger farm buildings have been preserved from this time. In 1840 the Quedlinburg seed breeding company Heinr. Mette the Gersdorfer Castle. The company later also acquired the property. A plaque on site refers to the tradition as a seed breeding company.

Keep

The keep is in the southern part of the district. It reaches a height of 24 meters. The tower, erected on an octagonal floor plan, has a diameter of 8.2 meters, with the walls being three meters thick. After the political turning point in 1989 , the keep was renovated using monument protection funds .
