Location of Quarmbeck in Saxony-Anhalt

Quarmbeck is a district of Quedlinburg . It is located two kilometers south of Quedlinburg am Quarmbach. The place consists of four parts: a medieval desert of the Quedlinburger Wüstungen Quernbeck , which is an important archaeological site in Saxony-Anhalt , a former airfield and air base, the former largest location of the Soviet armed forces in the vicinity of Halberstadt and today's district and industrial area Quarmbeck .

Quarmbeck desert

The medieval village of Quernbeck was first mentioned in 936. It fell desolately before 1426.

Airfield and air base

The Quedlinburg-Quarmbeck airfield was opened in 1927 and expanded into a training center for military pilots from 1934 to 1936. For this, 500 masons were from the Eichsfelder and Limburger space and an unknown number of prisoners of war temporarily forced laborers used. In this military flight training center, among others, the actor Heinz Rühmann completed his basic training as a defensive pilot.

Soviet troop base

Until its evacuation in 1993, Quarmbeck was the largest location for Soviet armed forces in the Halberstadt area. In the summer of 1960, around 100 German families north of the Kohlweg were relocated to Quedlinburg and Thale. A two-meter-high board wall was erected on the east and west side to provide privacy. Then cruise missiles were stationed in the barracks area of the former Quarmbeck air base under high security precautions . In military jargon, these were "front-wing missiles", which at first glance looked similar to a fighter plane, but the pilot's cabin was missing, instead a 1,000 kilogram (nuclear) explosive device was hidden in the fuselage. It is certain that the air defense system "Dwina / Volkhov" was stationed here from 1962, which was considered the most modern at the time. Observations of underground construction work on the southern slope of the Liebfrauenberg are probably closely related to the stationing of cruise missiles. After the cruise missiles were withdrawn in 1968, much of it disappeared under new buildings. In Quarmbeck there was now a tank regiment, a reconnaissance battalion and units of the air defense with the missile complex 2K11 and Buk. The effect of the radar antennas of the reconnaissance and control stations were noticeable through brief picture disturbances during television reception. At least four units of the Soviet Army were housed there: the 115th independent tank regiment, the 443rd radio technology battalion, the 1309th anti-aircraft missile division and the 4th reconnaissance battalion.

Village and commercial area

The commercial area is south of Quedlinburg, around five kilometers from the city center, and covers an area of 105 hectares, of which around 67 hectares are commercially available.

Infrastructure

Quarmbeck is located on the L 239 state road ( B 6n exit Quedlinburg Ost - B 242 in Güntersberge) and has a connection to the bus network of the Harz transport company . With the Selketalbahn line, which has been extended since 2006 , Quarmbeck has another connection to Quedlinburg , after the Frose – Quedlinburg branch line was shut down at the end of 2004 . The branch line from Bad Suderode train station to the air base is only partially visible today.
