Gerson dos Santos Peres (born May 2, 1931 in Cametá , Pará , † April 21, 2020 in Belém ) was a Brazilian politician , lawyer and journalist .

Gerson Peres studied law at the Federal University in Pará and worked temporarily as a journalist for O Liberal and A Província do Pará .

He came into politics in 1958 and was first a member of the Pará State Legislative Assembly from 1959 to 1963. Then he was Vice-Governor of the state from 1979 to 1982 under Governor Alacid Nunes . He then moved up to the national parliament of Brazil, where he from 1983 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2011 deputy was. Between 2003 and 2006, Peres was Special State Secretary for Social Promotion in Pará. In the 2006 elections in Brazil , he was re-elected to represent his home country with 103,555 valid votes or 3.32%. In 2011, the last term of his 53-year career as a politician ended.

Politically he was a party changer, he belonged to the parties PTB , UDN , ARENA , PDS , PPR , PPB and PP . In 1992 he voted for Fernando Collor de Mello's impeachment .

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil , Peres was hospitalized with COVID-19 on April 13, 2020, and he also died as a result. The government of Pará state ordered three days of national mourning.
