Gert Augst
Gert Augst (born June 14, 1927 in Reichenberg , Czechoslovakia , † March 26, 2005 in Mainz ) was a Catholic church musician .
biography
After graduating from high school in Offenburg, Augst studied church music and music education in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1947 to 1950 . He then worked from 1950 to 1966 in Überlingen on Lake Constance as a cathedral cantor and music teacher. From 1966 until his retirement in 1991 he headed the music school of the Episcopal Institute for Church Music in Mainz , of which he was also director from 1988 as the successor to Hans Niklaus . The main task of his activity as head of the music school was the training of church musicians in part-time jobs ( C-training ).
In 1974 Augst succeeded Heinrich Rohr as the diocesan church music director and later also one of the diocese's organ consultants. Musically, Augst has emerged as an organist in liturgy and concerts. The focus of his teaching activities at the Church Music Institute and his teaching assignment at the University of Mainz were liturgical organ playing, choir conducting and music theory.
In addition to his professional activity, he also worked in his residential parishes as an organist and choirmaster , initially in Mainz, St. Stephan (1966 to 1981). From 1981 to 1998 Augst led the church choir he founded in the parish of St. Franziskus in Mainz-Lerchenberg .
During his life, Augst was closely associated with the Prague composer Petr Eben . In 1980 he played the first German recording of Eben's composition "Window after Marc Chagall " on the Ott organ of the St. Antonius Chapel in Mainz, together with trumpeter David Tasa .
