Erich Gert Wangermann (born November 15, 1934 in Leipzig ; † February 9, 2014 in Berlin ) was a German physicist and biophysicist .

life and work

Gert Wangermann graduated from a secondary school in Leipzig in 1953 and studied physics at the Karl Marx University Leipzig (KMU) from 1953 to 1958 . He graduated as a physicist with the thesis Investigations on the detection of elemental sulfur-35 with the liquid scintillation counter , made at the Institute for Applied Radioactivity of the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) in Leipzig . The doctorate took place at the KMU in 1965 with academician Carl Friedrich Weiss on investigations into the absolute determination of the activity of low-energy pure β-steelers . The doctorate B to Doktor scientiae naturalium (Dr. sc. Nat.) With the work The Problem Solving Process in Scientific Experimental Research - A contribution to the analysis at the Institute for Molecular Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) in Berlin-Buch took place in 1978 The academy members Herbert Hörz , Günter Kröber and Klaus Schreiber were reviewers .

Wangermann began his career in 1959 as an assistant at the Institute of Applied radioactivity (IAR) of the DAC in Leipzig, joined in 1965 as a senior assistant at the Institute of Cancer Research in the "Central Institute of Molecular Biology" as a medical-biological research center of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Buch . There he set up a central measuring laboratory for the automatic detection of low-energy radionuclides and from 1968 to 1971 headed the special computing center of the medical-biological research center. From 1970 to 1975 he was director of the molecular physics department at the “Central Institute (ZI) for Molecular Biology”, and from 1974 to 1985 he was also head of the electron microscopy department . During this time, Gert Wangermann was appointed professor at the AdW in 1979 .

1971–1979 Wangermann was national coordinator for “Research in the field of biophysics” and 1974–1979 international coordinator of the research area “Biophysics of Proteins and Nucleic Acids” at Comecon . 1976–1979 he worked as deputy director of the Central Institute for Molecular Biology of the AdW in Berlin-Buch and was there from 1986 until the liquidation of the AdW in 1990 as head of the bioelectronics department. From 1979 until the liquidation of the AdW in 1990 he was an appointed member and secretary of the presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

After the AdW of the GDR had been wound up, Wangermann worked freelance in various projects and institutions as a project manager and scientific consultant:

  • In the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group
  • Managing partner of a ScienceConsult company
  • 1991–1993 President of the Society for Eastern European Research
  • 2002–2007 (founding) chairman of the “Leibniz Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies” (LIFIS) and deputy chairman of LIFIS until his death in 2014.

Gert Wangermann was married to Ruth Wangermann , b. Gohla. With her he had two sons.
