biography

Gertraud Gaber, whose father Otto Gaber was a successful soccer player with the Grazer AK , started more intensive ski training in 1956 and drove her first junior races in the winter of 1956/1957. She mainly concentrated on the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom , but also drove downhill runs . Gaber joined the Academic Ski Club Graz, was Austrian youth champion in giant slalom in 1959 and won slalom, giant slalom and triple combination at the state championships of Styria in 1960 . She made the leap into the Austrian national team and she achieved her first international successes towards the end of the winter of 1959/1960 when she was second in the giant slalom, fourth in the slalom and thus the winner of the combination at the Etna races .

Gaber, who began studying biology at the University of Graz in 1960, celebrated her most important success in March 1961 when she finished third behind Marianne Jahn and Heidi Biebl in the slalom of the famous Arlberg-Kandahar races in Mürren . A month earlier she had achieved her best career result at the Austrian championships with third place in the slalom in Lienz . After their marriage in 1961, Ehrenfried-Gaber achieved several top 10 results in FIS races and again a podium place in the winter of 1961/1962 , this time as second in the giant slalom in Saalfelden . For the 1962 World Cup in Chamonix , however, she could not qualify within the strong Austrian team.

In the winter of 1962/1963 Ehrenfried-Gaber was third in the giant slalom in Mariazell on the podium for the last time in an FIS race before she ended her career in 1963 at the age of 22. In addition to FIS races, she had also achieved top placements in Universiades and several victories in academic championships. Ehrenfried-Gaber remained closely associated with ski racing. In 1967 she became the city world champion in L'Alpe d'Huez and was for many years Technical Delegate of the International Ski Federation FIS .
