Gertraud Anna Maria Kaltenecker (born May 20, 1915 in Regensburg , † August 16, 2004 in Landshut ) was a German composer and singer .

Life

Gertraud Kaltenecker was born on May 20, 1915 in Regensburg. She grew up in a religious family and received music lessons as part of her school education at the Institute of the English Misses . After graduating from the Lyceum in 1932, she attended a commercial college . After graduating, she initially worked as an administrative clerk at the employment office and, from 1949, at the pension office in Regensburg, “earning a living without emotional stress”. However, she always remained loyal to music in this phase of life. From 1935 to 1940 she was instructed in composition and harmony by the composer Max Jobst . In 1943 she began an internship at the Regensburg church music school and got her first engagements as a vocal soloist. From 1946 to 1948 Kaltenecker studied composition with Joseph Haas , singing, piano, conducting and music history at the Academy of Music in Munich . Despite having successfully completed her music studies, after 1948 she only worked as a part-time composer and singer. The musical sideline, however, shaped her entire life.

meaning

Gertraud Kaltenecker's musical life's work comprises over 90 compositions. Including church and chamber music, compositions for piano, orchestra, organ and chants for choirs (both liturgical and secular). Their creations with their bound harmony were mostly based on the style of their influential teacher Joseph Haas. The organ works, often commissioned by the Regensburg parishes, play a special role in their musical work. In her song cycle Spirale from 1975 she also set some poems by the Regensburg writers' group International . She was honored with the Culture Prize of the City of Regensburg and the Nordgau Prize for her musical achievements. In the fifties and sixties of the 20th century she also celebrated great success as a singer. The music critics called the first performance of Paul Hindemith's Marienleben in 1958 an “eminent achievement in every respect, physically, vocal technically, musically, artistically”.
