Gertrud Wehl

Gertrud Wehl (born January 10, 1920 in Stolp ; † May 13, 2015 in Hamburg ) was a German Christian missionary who was particularly committed to the Sinti and Roma .

Life

Wehl came from a Pietist family . She was the second of four children of the building materials dealer Paul Wehl and his wife Martha geb. Raygrotzki. The family originally came from Sensburg / East Prussia (now Poland ). Wehl grew up in Stolp / Pomerania (now Poland) and completed an apprenticeship as a wholesale and retail saleswoman in his parents' company. At the age of 16, she says she has become a staunch Christian. In 1945 she and her parents fled from the invasion of the Russian troops. Their escape ended in the Oldenburger Land . There she worked as a parish assistant for Protestant parishes.

After a stay in the United Kingdom , Wehl joined the Mission for South East Europe in 1953. She particularly campaigned for the Sinti families living in northern Germany. During the summer holidays in the 1960s, she repeatedly traveled with Sinti families and their caravans through West Germany, Austria and Switzerland to carry out missionary events. Wehl was revered as the "mother of the gypsies ". Since the late 1960s, she has also carried out regular missions in the countries of the former Soviet Union with employees of the Gospel Christians .

Wehl was a member of the International Mission Conference . She worked as a missionary and lived in Hamburg until her death.
