Zinner went to school in Schalkau and was in labor service from 1942 and then a soldier on the Eastern Front and in the Balkans, among others. He was wounded and was briefly an American prisoner of war. After internships in pharmacies in Eisfeld and Sonneberg, Zinner studied chemistry (diploma in 1952) and pharmacy (diploma in 1951) in Marburg, with Hans Meerwein and Horst Böhme , among others. In 1953 he received his doctorate from Böhme, then conducted research in Marburg (and studied food chemistry on the side) and qualified as a professor in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1958. Afterwards he was a private lecturer and senior assistant at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Marburg. In 1963 he became associate professor for pharmaceutical technology at the University of Münster and in 1965 full professor for pharmaceutical chemistry at the TU Braunschweig . In 1969, he turned down an offer at the University of Munich.

He dealt with the synthesis of medicinal substances and in organic and preparative organic chemistry.

He dealt with hydroxylamines and hydrazines and their derivatives (including their reaction behavior, transfer of the Ugi reaction , representation of unknown ring systems with these components), protective functions in synthesis and synthon principles, hetero - allenes and -kumulenes , reactivity of acylating agents, cyanic acid esters , Acetal compounds, drug analysis and drug registration, nomenclature issues and chemistry history.

In 1972 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 1970 he has been a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .
