Protected landscapes on La Palma

There are four protected landscapes on the Canary Island of La Palma ( Paisaje Protegido , IUCN Category V ). The purpose of protection is to preserve the appearance of the respective cultural landscape . The protected areas are defined by law.

El Tablado

Two large gorges, the Barranco de Fagundo and the Barranco de Los Hombres , define the image of this landscape. The village of El Tablado lies on a ridge between the two gorges. The balsam milkweed is characteristic of the vegetation.

The reserve borders on the Guelguén Species Reserve to the north, east and west . It has a size of almost 222 hectares and is located in the territory of the municipality of Garafía . According to official information, 63 inhabitants live in the village of El Tablado.

The water from the Caldera de Taburiente flows through the Barranco de Las Angustias (" Gorge of Fears ") to the Atlantic Ocean. The exit of the gorge is in Puerto de Tazacorte. The steep rocky slopes with height differences of up to 1000 meters from the bottom of the gorge provide a habitat for a large number of endemic and threatened species; Canary pines can also be found at higher altitudes . As a geomorphological unit, the gorge is of high scientific interest and scenic value.

The reserve borders the Caldera de Taburiente National Park to the north and northeast . It has a size of about 1696 hectares and is on the territory of the municipalities of El Paso , Los Llanos de Aridane , Tijarafe and Tazacorte . A total of around 80 people live in individual settlements.

Tamanca

Tamanca is an elongated strip on the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja . The area is characterized by young lava fields, closed to the Atlantic by cliffs and steep slopes. In many places the natural landscape and the extensively used agricultural landscape - especially for viticulture - form a balanced cultural landscape. 55 endemic plant species, including endangered ones, can be found here.

The reserve borders on the Cumbre Vieja Nature Park to the east and the El Remo Protected Landscape to the west . It has a size of approximately 2007 hectares and is located in the territory of the municipalities of Fuencaliente , Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso . In the parts of the villages El Charco, Los Quemados and Jedey, which are within the protected area, live a total of about 50 inhabitants.

El Remo is a heavily used agricultural area, which is characterized by banana plantations and is already home to an urban settlement near the coast.

The reserve borders the Tamanca Protected Landscape in the east and the Reserva Marina Isla de La Palma marine reserve in the west . It has a size of almost 183 hectares and is located in the area of ​​the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane , south of Puerto Naos . About 108 inhabitants live in the village of El Remo; there are also scattered individual houses in the plantations.
