Nothing was given to us for free (Italian original title: Non ci è stato regalato niente ) is a medium-length documentary by the director Eric Esser from 2014 . The film portrays the former partisan and later trade unionist Annita Malavasi , who was one of the few high-ranking commanding women in the resistance movement under the code name Laila during the German occupation of Italy in World War II .

action

The film deals with the Italian resistance in World War II from the perspective of communist partisans. In interviews, the protagonist Malavasi reports on her career as a resistance fighter. The chronological narrative begins with the occupation of the country by German troops on September 8, 1943 (see the Cassibile armistice ) and ends with the liberation on April 25, 1945 . During this time, Malavasi developed from being her brother's supporter and going underground to commanding his own unit in the mountains.

In the course of the film she visits her friends Gina Moncigoli and Pierina Bonilauri, both also former resistance fighters, whom she met during the Resistancea. For the three women, the experience of resistance was the starting point for their emancipation in a patriarchal society.

background

Nothing was given to us was premiered on January 20, 2014 at the Festival Mundial de Cine Extremo San Sebastián in Veracruz, Mexico. The film celebrated its European premiere on March 10th at the FrauenFilmTagen 2014 in Vienna, the Italian premiere shortly afterwards on March 22nd, 2014 at the Sguardi Altrove women's film festival in Milan. According to the film's website, he was financially supported by the Hans Böckler Foundation's student funding solidarity fund. The Istoreco history institute in Reggio Emilia owns the rights to the archive images used and also provided logistical support for the film.

reception

The jury of the Festival Mundial de Cine Extremo San Sebastián justified its decision to award the prize on the one hand with the fact that "Nothing was given to us" offers a convincing insight into the important role that patriotic partisans played in Italy in World War II, and on the other with the impeccable one cinematic implementation of the topic.

The author Ingrid Strobl wrote on her blog about the film that it had been sorely lacking so far , since in Germany only "initiated" know about the participation of Italian women in the partisan struggle. The filmmaker Eric Esser succeeded in not only telling the story of three partisans and thus giving an insight into the motivations and commitment of many others. He was also able to get the women to speak frankly about their feelings and very personal experiences. In doing so, he gives the film a depth that goes beyond the veneration of heroines and retrospectively shows the women the painfully missed appreciation of their courage and their historical achievement. A wonderful film that I wish a large audience for.

The journalist Marcus Hammerschmitt wrote in the online magazine Telepolis in December 2014 that you don't get any Bandiera Rossa romance or militancy fetishism in the film , but instead the stories of three women whose decisions in a certain period of their lives demand respect. Despite the victims, from whom one hears with dismay, their story in the Resistancea is also that of a resistance to male dominance behavior and female adaptation. In view of the fact that the film is owed to a team from Germany, as well as the historical events that are at stake here, one could definitely consider it an act of lived reconciliation and international understanding. "We weren't given anything" should therefore not only be shown at small festivals, but also on television, for example - and in a really good broadcasting slot.
