WomenFilmDays
The FrauenFilmTage is an Austrian women's film festival, founded in Vienna in 2004, that takes place annually around International Women's Day on March 8th. International new productions from around 20 countries will be shown with a focus on documentaries and feature films. The thematic focus is on social and women's political issues, as well as women as filmmakers. The films are accompanied by discussions with the audience after the screenings.
history
The first years
- In 2004 the FrauenFilmTage was founded in Vienna and brought to life in the De France cinema. The FrauenFilmTage only lasted one day in 2004, but has already shown eight international feature and documentary films, including from Afghanistan, Guatemala and Iran.
- In 2005 the FrauenFilmTage moved to the film casino and opened there with "Yasmin" by Kenny Glenaan, who received the 2004 Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Locarno Film Festival. The international program was supplemented with the Austrian films "Sonnenflecken" by Barbara Albert , "Cappy Leit" by Marie Kreutzer , "Game over" by Elke Mayr and Harald Holba and "Borinboresi" by Gertraud Schwarz.
- In 2006 , the highlight of the FrauenFilmTage was the opening film " Grbavica ", which was awarded the Golden Bear at the 2006 Berlinale shortly before the start of the festival . Director Jasmila Žbanić was present at the opening, along with leading actress Mirjana Karanović and producer Barbara Albert from Coop99. Other films in the program were "Yes" by Sally Potter , "Sisters in Law" by Kim Longinotto , "Unfamiliar Skin" by Angelina Maccarone and "Waiting for the Clouds" by Yeşim Ustaoğlu .
- In 2007 the FrauenFilmTage started with " Das Fräulein " by Andrea Štaka , who received the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and the prize for the best film and best actress ( Mirjana Karanović ) at the Sarajevo Film Festival . Further highlights of the program were "La bestia nel cuore" by Cristina Comencini , "Princesas" by Fernando León de Aranoa , "Persecuted" by Angelina Maccarone and "Just before it happened" by Anja Salomonowitz .
- In 2008 , the FrauenFilmTage opened in the Burg Kino and played for the first time in both the Burg Kino and the Topkino. It opened with “Caramel” by Nadine Labaki , who won the audience award at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Further highlights of the FrauenFilmTage were “2 Girls from Istanbul” by Kutluğ Ataman , “ Annie Leibovitz : Life Through a Lens” by Barbara Leibovitz, “It's a Free World” by Ken Loach , “Madonnen” by Maria Speth and “Rule of Law - Justice in Kosovo ”by Susanne Brandstätter.
- In 2009 the FrauenFilmTage started in the Haydn Kino and played for the first time in the Filmhaus Kino am Spittelberg. In addition to the design, the program booklet has also been renewed and has been in a handy pocket size since then. It opened with “Mataharis” by Icíar Bollaín . Further highlights were "The Resistant - Witnesses of the White Rose" by Katrin Seybold , "Enfin Veuve / Endlich Witwe " by Isabelle Mergault and " Enemies of Happiness " by Eva Mulvad, who u. a. received the World Cinema Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
The new features
- In 2010 the program of the FrauenFilmTage was expanded to include an Austrian filmmaker. The focus of the first Personale was the director Karin Berger. Festival cinemas were the Filmcasino (opening) and the Filmhaus Kino am Spittelberg. It opened with the feature film “Nothing Personal” by Urszula Antoniak , who won the prize for best actress ( Lotte Verbeek ) and the FIPRESCI film review prize at the 2009 Locarno film festival . Further highlights were “In the Bazaar of the Sexes” by Sudabeh Mortezai , “Frozen River” by Courtney Hunt and “33 Scenes from Life” by Małgorzata Szumowska (Locarno Film Festival 2008: Special Jury Prize).
- In 2011 the FrauenFilmTage opened with “Chicas” by Yasmina Reza . Emmy Werner , former director of the Vienna Volkstheater, came to the film casino as the opening guest. The focus of the personal was the director Karin Brandauer, who died early . The films in the program were accompanied by discussions with the audience with companions of the director: Dr. Heide Kouba, Klaus Maria Brandauer , Christian Berger , Marika Green and Erich Hackl .

In 2012 the honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage was awarded for the first time. This honors women who have been working as film mediators, mentors or pioneers in particular for female filmmaking in Austria for years. The honorary award statue was designed by Vivien Schneider-Siemssen and sponsored by Dr. Alexia Stuefer. The first honorary award was given to Dr. Maria-Anna Kollmann, managing director of the umbrella association of Austrian filmmakers. The focus of Personale in 2012 was editor Karina Ressler and her work as film editor . Karina Ressler was awarded the Austrian Film Prize in 2011 for the best editing for “Lourdes” and in 2015 for “Amour Fou”.
Further highlights were "The Look - Charlotte Rampling" by Angelina Maccarone , "Greetings from the Colonies" by Nathalie Borges, "Where Do We Go Now" by Nadine Labaki (Audience Award at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival) and "We Need to Talk About Kevin “By Lynne Ramsay .
The anniversary
- In 2013 the FrauenFilmTage celebrated its 10th anniversary. On this occasion, the FrauenFilmTage invited the castle actress Caroline Peters as curator. Under the motto “Female Desire”, Caroline Peters curated a varied film program on female desire with “Ecstasy” by Gustav Machatý , “Mademoiselle” by Tony Richardson , “X Love Scenes” by Constance Ruhm , “Sex is Comedy” by Catherine Breillat , “ UmdeinLeben ”by Gesine Danckwart and“ Princess ”by Birgit Grosskopf. The honorary award was given to Dr. MLitt Andrea Braidt, Vice Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , film and media scholar with a focus on feminist film theory. The Personale dedicated the FrauenFilmTage to the sound designer Veronika Hlawatsch , who was awarded the Austrian Film Prize for the best sound design several times: in 2011 together with Marc Parisotto and Bernhard Maisch for the film “Der Räuber”, in 2012 together with Klaus Kellermann and Bernhard Maisch for “Michael "And in 2016 with William Edouard Franck and Bernhard Maisch for the best sound design for" Jack ".
The further success
- In 2014 the FrauenFilmDage was dominated by pioneers, adventurers and courageous women. The director of the art house cinema Wels Johanna Meyer received the honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage 2014 for her committed programming. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of pacifist, peace researcher and writer Bertha von Suttner , the FrauenFilmTage screened Holger Madsen's silent film “Die Waffen Nieder ” from 1915, musically accompanied by accordionist Maria Düchler and introduced by Madeleine Bernstorff. The Personale dedicated the 2014 FrauenFilmTage to the director, screenwriter and presenter Elisabeth Scharang , who has received a number of prizes for her filmmaking, such as the 2011 Axel Corti TV Prize.
- In 2015 the FrauenFilmTage opened with “Cure - The Lives of Others” by Andrea Štaka . The focus of the program was on films about combative women and activists. The focus of the personnel was the production designer Katharina Wöppermann and the subject of production design. Katharina Wöppermann was awarded the Austrian Film Prize in 2011 for the best production design for “Women Without Men” and in 2018 for “Light”. A special special were short films on the subject of humor and a subsequent discussion on the subject of “humorous, socio-political film”. Dr Andrea Braidt, Vice Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, artist SiSi Klocker, director Kurdwin Ayub and director Johanna Moder discussed this topic . The former director of Diagonale - the festival of Austrian film Barbara Pichler received the honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage for her committed program design and her initiative “Diagonale goes green” (sustainability in festival operations).

In 2016 the FrauenFilmTage started with “ I barely open my eyes ” by Leyla Bouzid . The honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage went to the initiators and activists of the platform “For a Thousand Lives: Be Human”, an initiative for a humane asylum policy that was supported by many filmmakers: producer Ursula Wolschlager , director Nathalie Borgers, Anne Laurent-Delage (International Relations Austrian Films) and producer Fabienne Servan-Schreiber. The staff was dedicated to the camerawoman Eva Testor and her work.
A new competition for students at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was introduced in cooperation with the Filmmakers' collecting society (VdFS), which also donated the prize money. The topic was “gender construction in short formats”.
The program was expanded by three special events: a discussion with international filmmakers on the current situation of women in the film industry “Women make films” at the Polish Institute in Vienna, a discussion on “Everyday life: acts of sexism, sexual violence and counter-strategies” in cooperation with the University of Vienna, Equality & Diversity and in cooperation with the European Parliament in Austria and the European Commission in Austria in the House of the European Union a discussion on "Women & Flight" with the documentary "Not Who We Are" by Carol Mansour. -
In 2017 , the FrauenFilmTage moved to the Metro Kinokulturhaus, the opening took place in the film casino with “The Water Effect” by the Icelandic director Sólveig Anspach . Elisabeth Schneider, Festival Director of the Radstadt Film Festival, received the honorary award for her dedicated programming. The staff was dedicated to the costume designer Monika Buttinger .
In 2017, the program of the FrauenFilmTage was expanded to include an international director. The Spanish director Isabel Croixet , who has won the Spanish film prize “Goya” several times and to whom the first tribute was dedicated, was a guest in Vienna . The guest of honor was the German director and author Helke Sander on the occasion of her 80th birthday. - In 2018 the FrauenFilmTage started with a new layout and a new festival cinema: the city cinema in the Künstlerhaus became the main venue. The focus of the film selection was on feature films and documentaries by women directors from Latin America. Gertraud Eiter and Gerlinde Schwarz received the honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage for their film series kinovi [sie] on in Innsbruck. The staff dedicated the FrauenFilmDage to caster Lisa Oláh and her work. The guest of honor was the German filmmaker Ula Stöckl on her 80th birthday. The program of the FrauenFilmTage was expanded to include a symposium on the topic of “Film criticism from a feminist perspective” and a special in the Das Weisse Haus gallery with the film “Timeswings / The Art of Hanne Darboven ” by Rasmus Gerlach.
- In 2019 the FrauenFilmTage started in the Filmcasino with the Austrian premiere of “The Third Wife” by Ash Mayfair. Directors Anja Salomonowitz and Mirjam Unger received the honorary award of the FrauenFilmTage 2019 as initiators together with Wiktoria Pelzer (Stadtkino Wien) for the political film series “Resistance Cinema”. The staff dedicated the FrauenFilmTage to the topic of light in film and to the head lighting technician Kimber Lee Jerrett. This year's Tribute of the FrauenFilmTage was dedicated to the German director Margarethe von Trotta . The 2019 symposium was dedicated to the current topic of "Political Correctness in Film". The speakers were Dr Sabine Perthold, producer Ursula Wolschlager and director and artist Mara Mattuschka .

Honorary award
Since 2012, at the opening of the FrauenFilmTage, an honorary award in cooperation with the Frauen-Arbeit-Film network has been given to women who work in the background for women’s filmmaking and are honored with this award for their commitment. The honorary award represents a stylized woman.

Competition of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
Since 2016, the FrauenFilmTage and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna have chosen the winners of the short film competition on the topic of “Gender Construction in Short Formats”. The program shows the examination of filmic forms of expression and includes video works from first-semester students to graduates.
The collecting society of Austrian filmmakers (VdFS) donates the prize money of 1,000 euros.

The FrauenFilmTage regularly cooperates with cinemas and women's offices in the Austrian federal states, such as the Programmkino Wels, the Cinema Paradiso St. Pölten and the Women's Office St. Pölten, the Cinema Paradiso Baden, kinovi [sie] on in Innsbruck, as well as the Filmfest Frauenwelten in Tübingen, but also with other institutions such as the Polish Institute Vienna.
