The Society for Data Protection and Data Security (GDD) eV is a German association for data protection and data protection officers .

The Union

The GDD was founded in 1977 as a company for data protection and data backup and is based in Bonn . With over 3800 members (as of July 2020) it is the largest German data protection association. The association is a co-signatory of the joint declaration of the AK Storage of January 2007 on the draft law on data retention .

On November 18, 2009 the registered non-profit association was renamed the Society for Data Protection and Data Security by resolution of the members . It advocates sensible, justifiable and technically feasible data protection and supports data protection officers and data processing agencies in implementing data protection and data security .

The GDD is a founding member of the Confederation of European Data Protection Organizations (CEDPO), an umbrella organization of European data protection organizations, founded in September 2011 . Together with Datakontext conferences, the GDD organizes the data protection conference DAFTA , which takes place every November in Cologne.

Since November 21, 2012, the chairman of the GDD has been Rolf Schwartmann , u. a. Head of the Cologne Research Center for Media Law at the Faculty of Economics at the Technical University of Cologne .

Since 2013, the association has been awarding the GDD data protection prize annually, with which "the personal commitment and the achievements of personalities are to be recognized who have courageously campaigned for the strengthening of the basic right to informational self-determination in times of big data and increasing digitalization".

  • 2019: Ranga Yogeshwar , science journalist, for his contribution "to the understanding of society for the complex interrelationships between data protection and data security" and "for the acceptance of data protection in the practice of companies".
  • 2018: Thomas Kranig , President of the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision , for the "clarification of the new law" from the General Data Protection Regulation and the new Federal Data Protection Act by his authority
  • 2017: Jörg Eickelpasch , Head of Department in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for his “personal commitment” in the “largely jointly responsible” adjustment of the BDSG to the new European data protection law
  • 2016: Viviane Reding , for her "commitment to the creation of the European General Data Protection Regulation"
  • 2015: Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger , for her "honorable and courageous commitment" against "large eavesdropping, data retention, internet blocking and excessive communication monitoring by secret services"
  • 2014: Jan Philipp Albrecht , for "his special services to the further development of data protection at European level"
  • 2013: Peter Schaar , for his "extraordinary and publicly effective commitment to the basic right to informational self-determination, which he demonstrated before and during his ten-year term of office."

Science award of the GDD

The association awards the GDD's Bernd Hentschel Science Prize and the Science Promotion Prize for data protection and data security every year . The GDD Science Award honors outstanding scientific work in the areas of data protection and data security that meets all criteria of excellence and makes an excellent contribution to the further development of data protection law. The board of the GDD has set up a scientific advisory board that advises and supports the society. The Scientific Advisory Board consists of experts in the fields of data protection and IT security.
