The Međimurje Horse Stud ( Croatian Ergela međimurskog konja ) in Žabnik is a small farm in the far north of Croatia , founded in 2015. It is located in the northwest of the Međimurje County , on a communal meadow next to the village of Žabnik in the municipality of Sveti Martin na Muri , not far from the Mura river .
The stud is used to maintain and revitalize the Međimurje-horse , an autochthonous Croatian draft horse - horse race , which is threatened with extinction arise in the County.
The founder of the stud is Međimurska priroda (The nature of the Medjimurje) , a public institution that is responsible for nature conservation in the county, but also for control, development, promotion and use for tourist purposes.
The stud farm extends over an area of about eight hectares and, in addition to the horse stable, also includes a well and animal feed store. The horse stable of the stud was built as a new building in 2015, with the financial support of the IPA-European fund responsible for cross- border cooperation . With the same funds, eight mares of the Međimurje horse were redeemed by private breeders and they now represent the main stock of the stud.
