The Međimurje horse [ mɛdʑimuːrjɛ ] ( German also Murinsulaner , Croatian Međimurski conj or Međimurec , Hungarian Muraközi ló , Slovenian Medžimurski conj ) is an autochthonous Croatian draft horse - horse breed originating from the Međimurje County .
history
These pure-blooded horse breed originated most likely in the late 18th or early 19th century by crossbreeding local mares (already with an admixture, or unit of Anglo-Arab blood) and stallions of the Noric - Ardennes - Percheron - and Brabant - Strains . Since the present-day county, then the Me Herrimurje rule , was part of the Hungarian Zala county for a time during the Habsburg Monarchy , one often finds in the specialist literature that the Međimurje horse is a breed of Hungarian origin.
Once distributed all over northern Croatia (Counties Međimurje , Krapina-Zagorje , Varaždin and Koprivnica-Križevci ), as well as in southwest Hungary , eastern Slovenia and Austria , only a Međimurje horse population of about 40 animals remained in the local county today. However, in southwest Hungary, across the bank of the Mur River , the population is slightly larger, although it is generally critically endangered.
To preserve and revitalize the Međimurje horse, the Žabnik Stud was founded in 2015 in the northwest of the Međimurje County by a public institution for nature conservation .
features
A typical Međimurje horse is stocky, compact and powerful, with a height at the withers between 155 and 165 cm, which makes it significantly higher than the Croatian Posavac (140-150 cm) and similar to a Croatian compared to other domestic cold-blooded horse breeds Cold blood (150-160 cm) is.
The head with relatively small ears sits on a short, muscular and slightly curved neck, the chest and back are broad, and the torso is well developed, strong and harmonious, while the legs are massive and well developed. The most common coat colors are brown (from light to dark), black brown, fox or rap , other colors are extremely rare.
It is generally a good-natured, hard-working and persevering horse breed with a steady temperament, which is mainly used as a draft and work horse in agriculture and forestry . Since this is hardly represented any more due to the advancing mechanization , today Međimurje horses are also used more and more for meat production.
