Mezőhegyes Stud
The stud Mezőhegyes is a stud farm in the town of Mezőhegyes , in county Mezőkovácsháza , Békés County , in southeast Hungary on the border with Romania .
Due to the lack of horses under Maria Theresa , Emperor Josef II founded the Austro-Hungarian State Stud Mezőhegyes on the advice of Rittmeister József von Csekonics on an area of 19,000 hectares. The stud was opened in 1785. The important sires Nonius Senior and Gidran founded the Hungarian breeds Nonius and Gidran .
The thoroughbreds Furioso (1841) and North Star (1852) became the progenitors of the Furioso-North Star breed .
The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 also affected Mezőhegyes. After that, the breed was rearranged. In 1869 Mezőhegyes, like all Hungarian stud farms, was handed over to Hungary and the population was cleared. The stud breeds Gidran , Halbblut and Nonius were also bred .
The Furioso and Gidran lines were also successfully bred at the Radautz stud .
Today sport horses and Nonius are bred at the Mezőhegyes stud.
