Gheorghe Șincai (born February 28, 1754 in Râciu , Mureş district ; † November 2, 1816 in Svinia ) was a Romanian theologian, historian and Romanist from the Transylvanian School .

life and work

Șincai attended schools and colleges in Târgu Mureş , Klausenburg , Bistrița , Blaj , and (after entering the monastery of the Basilian in Blaj) from 1774 to 1779 in Rome, then in Vienna, where he met Samuil Micu . His multilingualism included Romanian, Greek, Latin, Hungarian, Italian, French and German. From 1784 to 1794 he was the head of the Transylvanian Greek Catholic school system, but then fell out with the church leadership under Ioan Bob and, after imprisonment and acquittal, was tutor to Count Daniel Vass von Szege in Svinia until 1801 . From 1804 to 1806 he supervised the printing of Romanian texts in Buda .

Șincai belonged to the Transylvanian School , which combined historical research on the origin of the Romanians with language description and language planning of Romanian. Together with Samuil Micu, Șincai wrote the first grammar of Romanian ( Elementa 1780). It contained evidence of the closeness of Romanian to Latin and was written in Latin (for reading by enlightened Europe).

In Romania, numerous streets and institutions bear the name Gheorge Șincais.
