Gheorghe Ciolac (born August 10, 1908 in Nagykomlós , Austria-Hungary , † April 13, 1965 in Timișoara , Timiș County ) was a Romanian football player . He played 116 games in the highest Romanian soccer league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1930 World Cup.
Career
Ciolac started playing football at Politehnica Timișoara at the age of 14 . In 1924 he joined local rivals Banatul . With Banatul he played in the championship of the Timiș region. It initially failed to qualify for the final round of the Romanian football championship, as Romanian football was dominated by Chinezul Timișoara in the mid-1920s . Only when Chinezul got into financial difficulties Ciolac was able to win the championship of Timișoara with Banatul in 1929. In the final round that followed, he achieved the greatest success to date by reaching the semi-finals.
In 1930 Ciolac left Banatul and moved to the professional team of Ripensia Timișoara . Since the Romanian championship was reserved for amateurs at the time , the team only played friendly matches. When the Romanian professional league Divizia A was founded in 1932, Ripensia was one of its founding members and Ciolac came on September 11, 1932 to his first competitive game for his new club. Since Ripensia was one of the best teams of the 1930s, Ciolac was at this time as captain four league titles and two cup victories to celebrate. He ended his career in 1941.
National team
Ciolac completed a total of 24 games for the Romanian national soccer team from 1928 to 1937 and scored 13 goals. He made his debut on May 6, 1928 against Yugoslavia . In his second game against Bulgaria , he managed a hat trick . In 1934 national coach Josef Uridil nominated him for the soccer world championship in Italy , but did not use him in Romania's only game against Czechoslovakia .
