Gheorghe Ivănescu

Gheorghe Ivănescu (* 2. November 1912 in Vutcani, Vaslui county , † 3. June 1987 in Iasi ) was a Romanian linguist , Rumänist and Indo-Europeanist .

life and work

Ivănescu graduated from high school in Bârlad . He studied in Iași (1930–1933), then at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris (1934–1935), and in Rome (1935–1937). In 1945 he received his doctorate with the thesis Problemele capitale ale vechii române literare (Iaşi 1948, 2012).

Ivănescu taught Romance and general linguistics at the universities of Iași , Timișoara (1962–1969) and Craiova (1969–1971), then he returned to Iași (this time to an Indo-European chair).

Ivănescu was a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy from 1965 .

In 2012, a colloquium was held in his honor at the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași under the title “Gheorghe Ivănescu - 100 de ani de la naştere”.

A street in Timișoara is named after him.
