Gheorghe Manu (born July 26, 1833 in Bucharest , † May 16, 1911 ibid) was a Romanian general , politician and statesman .

Life

The son of Ioan Manu and Ana Manu, née Ghika, left Romania after completing his studies. He then studied in Prussia at military academies in Potsdam and Berlin . Then he became a lieutenant in the Prussian army . In 1858 Manu returned to Romania. After joining the Romanian Army , he was later responsible for organizing the Romanian artillery. Gheorghe Manu was also very active politically. In addition to the office of prime minister, he held many important positions in the state. Gheorghe Manu was Minister of Finance from June 14, 1865 to January 30, 1866, and Minister of Defense from June 14, 1869 to December 17, 1870. He was then from October 1873 to April 1877 mayor of Bucharest .

In 1877, the brigadier general received in the so-called Romanian War of Independence, the Star of Romania with the rank of commander and the "Ordinul Virtutea Militară". Later Manu was again from November 12, 1888 to November 4, 1889 Minister of War and then from November 5, 1889 to February 15, 1891 Prime Minister of the country . During this time Gheorghe Manu was Minister of Agriculture and Minister of the Interior twice. Thereafter he was President of the Chamber of Deputies from February 26, 1892 to October 24, 1895. After the turn of the century, Manu was again Minister of War from December 22, 1904 to March 11, 1906. Gheorghe Manu died in Bucharest at the age of 78.
