Gherardo Hercolani Fava Simonetti
HE the Venerable Bailli Fra ′ Gherardo Maria Hercolani Fava Simonetti (born August 20, 1941 in Bologna , Italy ) was the Grand Commander of the Order of Malta from February 12, 2009 to December 6, 2011 , one of the four high offices of the Order.
Religious life
After Hercolani was accepted into the Order of Malta in 1963 , he took perpetual vows in 1977 and became a professed knight . In 1986 he was raised to Profess-Großkreuz-Bailli.
From 1984 to 1994 he was the Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Lombardy and Veneto.
Since 2006 he was a member of the Sovereign Council , of which he had already belonged from 1978 to 1983.
He has also been the Order's Pilgrim President since June 2007.
On February 12, 2009, after the resignation of his predecessor Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto , Simonetti was appointed Grand Commander by the Sovereign Council for the time until the next General Chapter . On June 8th, 2009 he was elected for 5 years by the General Chapter. After Simonetti had declared his resignation as Grand Commander to the Grand Master for health reasons , Carlo d'Ippolito di Sant'Ippolito , professed Grand Cross Knight and member of the Sovereign Council, was appointed at the session of the Sovereign Council on December 6th and 7th until the next General Chapter appointed Grand Commander.
