Giaco Schiesser

Giaco Schiesser (* 1953 in Glarus ) is a Swiss theorist and cultural and media scientist.

Live and act

Giaco Schiesser studied philosophy, cultural studies and German at the Free University of Berlin . Thereafter teaching and research at the Free University of Berlin and at the German Seminar of the University of Basel .

From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, he was primarily active as a publicist and science editor: ten years as a member of the editorial team of the journal contradiction , five years as science editor at WoZ . In addition, as an associated member of the Hamburg Institute for Migration and Racism Research, he carried out research in particular on questions of contemporary subject constitutions and on questions of everyday racism.

He has worked at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) since the mid-1990s . At first he worked as a lecturer for the theory and history of visual communication and the media, before he created the study area New Media (today: BA Art & Media / Practice Field Digitiality) in 1998, which he worked with the artist group Knowbotic Research and the media artist Margarete until 2002 Jahrmann directed. Since then, the focus of his work has been on the profound economic, political, cultural and artistic consequences of digitization in post-Fordist society and on the concept of the "obstinacy of the media" as an attempt to more precisely define the mediality of the media and their artistic potential explore. In 2002 he was appointed professor for cultural and media theories . From 2002 to 2017 he was director of the Department of Art & Media at the Zurich University of Art and Design (2002–2007) and then the Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK, member of the university management (both 2007–2017) and head of the research dossier at the ZHdK (2013-2018). Since 1997 he has contributed to the conception, establishment and implementation of artistic curricula (BFA, MFA) and artistic (practice-based) PhD programs, to the problems of artistic research as well as to questions of authorship , psychoanalysis and Bob Dylan as a DJ.

In December 2019 he was awarded the “Top 100 Leaders in Education” award. The prize, awarded for the first time by the Global Forum for Education & Learning (GFEL) in 2019, has the purpose of “to honor the relentless efforts and zeal of individuals who have played a prominent role in changing the face of education at the global as well as the local level. "

Since 2009, Giaco Schiesser has also been a permanent visiting professor for artistic and scientific Ph.D. at the Art University Linz (Austria). In this role, he conceived and founded a PhD cooperation program in artistic research (Zurich University of the Arts and Art University Linz), which he has also directed since it was founded in 2012 (since 2017 together with Florian Dombois). From 2009 until it was closed by the ETH in 2017, he was also a member of the board of the interdisciplinary Cortona Week (2009-2017), from 2013 to 2020 member, since 2015 Vice-President of the Executive Board of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR) , since 2013 is a member of the advisory board of Entresol, Network for the Sciences of the Psyche.

His research and publication focuses are culture, media, subject theory / epistemology / aesthetics, art research / democracy, publics and everyday culture.
