Zanetel started in Santa Caterina for the first time in the cross-country skiing world cup in December 1993 and finished 96th over 30 km classic. He ran his first race in the Continental Cup in February 1996 in Valsassina , which he finished in 13th place over 15 km freestyle. The following year he won the Continental Cup in Toblach over 30 km classic. In March 1998 he got his first World Cup points in Falun with the 23rd place in the 10 km freestyle. In December 2002 he won the 15 km mass start race at the Continental Cup in Val Formazza . From the 2000/01 season to 2006, he mainly took part in competitions of the Marathon Cup . He won the American Birkebeiner in 2001, 2002 and 2004 , the Keskinada Loppet in 2003 and the Birkebeinerrennet and La Sgambeda in 2004 . He also came second in the Engadin Skimarathon in 2004 and second in the Marcialonga and third in the König-Ludwig-Lauf the following year . He won the overall standings in the 2000/01 season and in the 2003/04 season . In the 2001/02 , 2002/03 and 2004/05 season he was third in the overall standings. In January 2004 in Val di Fiemme he achieved fourth place at the Marcialonga, his best placement in the individual World Cup.
