Gianmatteo "Matteo" Matteotti (born February 17, 1921 in Rome ; † June 14, 2000 ) was an Italian politician of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI), the Partito Socialista Unitario (PSU) and most recently the Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano (PSDI), who was a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ) between 1948 and 1983 . From 1954 to 1957 he was party secretary of the PSDI and held several ministerial offices in various governments.

Life

Family background, journalist and member of the Chamber of Deputies

Matteotti was a son of the General Secretary of the Partito Socialista Unitario (PSU) and member of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) Giacomo Matteotti, who was murdered on June 10, 1924, and a younger brother of the politician Giancarlo Matteotti , who was also a member of the PSI between 1946 and 1963 . He himself attended the state high school named after Terenzio Mamiani (Liceo ginnasio statale Terenzio Mamiani) in Rome and then completed a degree in political science . After completing his studies, he worked as a journalist . On September 8, 1943, he joined a partisan group of the Resistancea resistance movement led by Eugenio Colorni . In 1944 he became editor of the newspaper Rivoluzione Socialista . He has also written articles for newspapers and magazines such as Tempi moderni , Critica sociale , Tempo presente and Ragionamenti .

After the end of World War II he was briefly in 1946 Chairman of the International Socialist Youth Association ( International Union of Socialist Youth ) . He became a member of the Constituent National Assembly ( Assemblea Costituente ) on June 25, 1946 after the elections of June 2, 1946 . In the elections of April 18, 1948 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ) for the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) for the first time , to which he belonged for 35 years until the June 27, 1983 elections . At the beginning of his membership in parliament he was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Colonies in the first legislative period from June 1948 to June 1953. In the second legislative period he was a member of the Committee on Transport, Communication and Merchant Marine between July 1953 and June 1958 and again from July 1955 to June 1958 of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Colonies.

Party Secretary of the PSDI and Minister

In February 1954, Matteotti succeeded Giuseppe Saragat as party secretary of the PSDI, which was renamed Partito Socialista dei Lavoratori Italiani (PSLI) on January 11, 1947 and Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano in 1952 and held this position until April 1957, after which Saragat again became his successor. Between June 1958 and July 1976 he was a member of the Committee on Prime Minister Affairs, Home Affairs, Religion and Public Corporations during the third to sixth and fifth legislative periods.

On August 6, 1970, Matteotti was appointed to a ministerial office by Prime Minister Emilio Colombo in his cabinet as Minister of Tourism and Events (Ministro del Turismo e Spettacolo) and held this office until February 17, 1972. In the following second Andreotti cabinet and in the fourth and fifth Rumor cabinets , he served as Foreign Trade Minister (Ministro del Commercio con l'Estero) between June 26, 1972 and November 23, 1974 .

In the eighth legislative period, he was a member of the Committee on Budget, Programs and State Participation from July 1976 to June 1979. Most recently he was a member of the Defense Committee in the eighth legislative period from July 1979 to July 1983. He was also a member of the Finance and Treasury Committee between October 1980 and July 1983. At times he was active as General President of the National Scout Association CNGEI (Corpo Nazionale Giovani Esploratori Italiani) .
