Gibreel F. Haddad

Sheikh Gibril Fouad Haddad (born 1960 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is a Sunni scholar and Sufi of the Naqshbandi tradition ( tariqa ), translator of classical Islamic texts and religious leader with a Lebanese - American background. He is considered to be one of the clearest voices of traditional Islam in the West.

Haddad was born into a Catholic family and was later educated in the United Kingdom and the United States. He converted to Islam while studying at Columbia University in New York City . Important teachers were Mawlānā Sheikh Nazim al-Haqqani (1922-2014) a Cypriot Sufi teacher of the Naqshbandi tradition, and Shaykh Hisham Kabbani , co-founder and chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of America .

He traveled to Damascus to continue his studies there. Haddad has translated and published more than 30 works, including Allah's Names and Attributes of Imam al-Bayhaqi and The Prophet's Night Journey and Ascension of Sheikh Muhammad ibn 'Allawi al Maliki .

He was one of the Islamic teachers at SunniPath (sunnipath.com), today: Qibla (qibla.com), an online Islamic academy, and is now at Living Islam (livingislam.org).

In 2009 he was listed on the list of 500 most influential Muslims by the Prince al-Walid-bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center of Jordan.

Currently (as of 7/2014) he is with his family in the Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam and is a visiting fellow at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Center for Islamic Studies at the University of Brunei Darussalam .
