Gigi Chao

Gigi Chao ( Chinese  趙 式 芝 , Pinyin Zhào Shìzhī ; * 1979 ) is a Chinese architect , model agency boss and helicopter pilot.

Life

Chao is the daughter of entrepreneur Cecil Chao and actress Kelly Yao Wei . She graduated from the University of Manchester and now works as a director in her father's company. She gained international fame after publicly admitting her homosexuality and after a public conflict with her father. He does not accept his daughter's homosexuality and after she married her long-term partner, he publicly offered an amount of 65 million US dollars in 2012 for the man who manages to court his daughter. In 2013 he doubled the amount to 1 billion Hong Kong dollars for “the perfect man for his lesbian daughter”. This matter has been referred to as the "culture war in the center of Hong Kong's money nobility."

Gigi Chao is seen as a lesbian role model and campaigns for the rights of homosexuals in China . After the first "bounty" from her father, there was a demonstration in Hong Kong , where Gigi Chao and her mother appeared as speakers. The demonstration was organized by evangelical groups that campaign for the rights of minorities. The organizers said there were 50,000 participants, with the police assuming 5,000 demonstrators. Government officials also spoke out on this affair and against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Even afterwards, she marched in demonstrations for same-sex marriage, campaigns for homosexual rights and advises well-known Hong Kong figures on their coming-out plans. Gigi Chao wrote an open letter to her father in 2014 via the media asking for tolerance.

The South China Morning Post reported that Sacha Baron Cohen was working on a film project called The Lesbian that was inspired by the affair.

Private life

Gigi Chao has been in a relationship with her partner Sean Eav since 2005, who she married in France in 2012 .
