Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias
Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias [ xɪl ˈkaɾlɔs roˈðɾiɣɛθ ɪˈɣlɛsɪ̯as ] (born May 26, 1946 in Gijón , Asturias , Spain ; † January 17, 2019 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lawyer and President of the European Court of Justice .
Rodríguez Iglesias studied at the University of Oviedo , where he graduated in 1968. He received his PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1975 and was appointed Professor of International Law at the University of Extremadura in 1982 , a position he also held at the University of Granada between 1983 and 2003 .
On January 31, 1986 he was appointed judge at the European Court of Justice, of which he was President between October 7, 1994 and October 6, 2003. In December 2003 he was appointed Professor of International Law at the Complutense Madrid University in Madrid. In the same year Iglesias was awarded the Walter Hallstein Prize .
