Gila was a German progressive rock band from Stuttgart that existed from 1969 to 1974.

history

Gila was founded in Stuttgart in 1969. The original line-up included Wolf Conrad Veit, called "Conny" (vocals and guitar), Walter Wiederkehr (bass), Fritz Scheyhing ( organ and mellotron ) and Daniel Alluno ( drums ). Known through live performances, the band released their first self-titled LP two years later, which was influenced by the psychedelic sound of the time. The album was produced by Dieter Dierks . The album was released on a BASF record label and is now a sought-after collector's item. The album was later reissued by Fonoteam .

Shortly before their separation in 1972 Gila played live in the night music of the WDR . This February 26, 1972 gig, which only played new pieces of music, was later released on CD by Garden of Delights. The front cover was painted by Wolf Conrad Veit. After the dissolution, Alluno played for Sameti and Wolf Conrad Veit switched to Popol Vuh .

The group was re-established in 1973. In addition to Conny Veit (vocals, guitar, flute, Moog), Gila consisted of his then partner Sabine Merbach (vocals) as well as Daniel Fichelscher (drums, percussion, bass) and Florian Fricke (mellotron, piano ), both from Popol Vuh. The LP Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee cannot be compared musically with the first two records. These are firmly established, folky pieces of music based on the book by Dee Brown , which deals with the oppression of the Indians in North America .

In the summer of 1974 the band Gila finally broke up. Veit was then active with Amon Düül II , Guru Guru and Coney Island, among others .

style

Initially oriented more towards Pink Floyd , the live album Night Works switched to a style oriented towards The Doors . The new edition with a different line-up, on the other hand, is more oriented towards folk music with Indian influences.
