Gilbert de Rudder

Gilbert de Rudder ( pseudonym : Grizzly ; born December 17, 1911 in Landegem , Belgium , † July 18, 1946 in Belgium) was a Belgian motorcycle racer .

Career

Before the Second World War, De Rudder was one of the best Belgian motorcycle racers and was a works rider for Saroléa . In 1936 and 1937 he won the title in the 500 cc class of the International Belgian Motorcycle Road Championship . He also won in 1936 before G. Lieutaud ( Monet Goyon ) and "Cora" (Saroléa) at the XX. Grands Prix de France in Montlhéry . In 1938 he took part in the European motorcycle championship and finished fourth in the half- liter class at the Swiss Grand Prix at the Circuit des Nations in Geneva behind Harold Daniell , Freddie Frith and Georges Cordey (all Norton ).

On Saturday, July 13, 1946, “Grizzly” had a serious accident during training for the Grand Prix du Zoute in Knokke-le-Zoute on the North Sea coast of his Belgian homeland. He went off the track with his machine and hit a tree. De Rudder was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries five days later, on July 18, at the age of 34. In addition to de Rudder, the Briton George Gott also had a fatal accident at the event.
