Gilles Lebreton (born October 11, 1958 in Brest ) is a French legal scholar and politician of the Rassemblement National .

Life

Lebreton studied philosophy at the University of Paris IV (doctorate 1987; doctor's mother Janine Chanteur ) and public law at the University of Paris II (doctorate 1988). In 1990 he was qualified to teach ( Agrégation ) law and was subsequently appointed to a chair in public law at the University of Le Havre . From 1995 to 2000 he was dean and from 1995 to 2012 he was a member of the university's administrative board. He has written textbooks on general administrative law (Droit administratif général) as well as freedom and human rights (Libertés publiques et droits de l'Homme) .

He began his political career in 2000 with the national conservative party Rassemblement pour la France . In the 2002 presidential election , he supported Jean-Pierre Chevènement , praising his sovereignist ideas, but was disappointed that he clung to too many ideas from the political left . Since it was founded in 2012, he has been a member of the Souveraineté, Indépendance et Libertés (SIEL) party and its deputy chairman from 2013.

In the European elections in May 2014, SIEL was a partner of the Rassemblement Bleu Marine electoral alliance led by the right-wing extremist Front National and Marine Le Pens . On their list, Lebreton was elected to the European Parliament as a representative of the constituency of Western France . In 2008 Lebreton had criticized the Front National for its references to Carl Schmitt's thinking , which he rejects as anti-freedom. Now, however, he declared that the Front National had changed “spectacularly”. In November 2014 he left SIEL and joined the Front National. He was non-attached until June 2015, then a member of the Group for Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF). In the European Parliament he is a member of the Legal Affairs Committee and of the delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union . In February 2018 he was appointed head of the Front National (renamed Rassemblement National in June 2018) in the EU Parliament.

Since his re-election in 2019, he has been a member of the Identity and Democracy (ID) parliamentary group . In addition to his previous committee and delegation membership, he has since been a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development .
