Gimme Shelter is a documentary musical film documenting the Rolling Stones' 1969 USA tour .

content

The film by Charlotte Zwerin and the brothers Albert and David Maysles mainly deals with the incident in which the 18-year-old Meredith Hunter tried on December 6, 1969 at the Altamont Free Concert on the Altamont Speedway with a drawn revolver on stage and was stabbed to death by a member of the Hells Angels , Alan Passaro. Passaro was then charged with murder, but acquitted, as the act was considered an act of self-defense. The Hells Angels had been hired by the Rolling Stones as stewards and protection force for the stage, which turned out to be a mistake in addition to the chaotic organization with the short-term relocation of the festival to the undersized speedway. After a short time the members of the gang were heavily drunk or under other drugs and then indiscriminately beat spectators who came too close to their Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which they had placed in front of the stage as a "protective palisade". They mobbed various musicians and even hit Marty Balin , the singer of the opening act for Jefferson Airplane , in the face. The Rolling Stones drew conclusions from the death and the organizational disaster at this appearance. The strict safety precautions that they introduced shortly afterwards at their concerts are still considered exemplary today.

At the beginning of the film, a radio interview can be heard over the phone with Sonny Barger , a well-known founding member of the Hells Angels, who commented on the riots and defended his clubmates:

“When they started fiddling with our motorcycles, it started. […] In any case, nobody kicks my motorcycle! […] But when you stand there and this thing is your life, you've put all your money into it and you love it more than anything else in the world, and one guy steps against it, then it's clear what's going on. You have to get it. [...] I am by no means one of these Friedensheinis or flower children or whatever they are called. "

Contrary to many reports, including Rolling Stone magazine , Mick Jagger did not comment on the death with “ When we play this song, always something funny happens ” (German: “ When we play this song, something funny always happens ”). The comment came after a previous commotion during the song Sympathy for the Devil . Meredith Hunter died right after the song Under My Thumb finished , as seen in the documentary Gimme Shelter .

The film was released on DVD on the 40th anniversary of the concert.

Reviews

“The film reveals little of this background story, instead it strings together concert recordings and lets the Stones at the editing table mourn the murder, of which they were at least not entirely innocent. In this sense, the film is a double document of the Rolling Stones media event . "
