Gingee ( Tamil : செஞ்சி Ceñci ; also: Gingy , Senji ) is a city with around 30,000 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

Gingee is located in northeast Tamil Nadu in the Viluppuram district halfway between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai on the Gingee River at an altitude of approx. 90 m above sea level. d. M. The next largest city is Puducherry (Pondicherry) about 70 km (driving distance) southeast, Vellore is about 90 km northwest; the metropolis of Chennai is about 170 km northeast. The climate is humid; Rain actually only falls in the months of July to December.

Official population statistics have only been kept since 1991 and are published regularly. The increase in the population in recent decades is mainly due to the continued immigration of families from the surrounding area.

Almost 75% of the residents of Gingee are Hindus , almost 19% Muslim and a good 6% are Christians ; the other religious groups (Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs) hardly play a role. As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 82% of the population as their mother tongue; 15% speak Urdu and 3% Telugu .

The area around Gingee is dominated by agriculture; Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city.
history
It is believed that the Cholas built a first fort near an existing settlement around 900, which was renewed and enlarged during the dominance of the Vijayanagar Empire (14th / 15th centuries). Later, the Sultanate of Bijapur and the Mughal Empire briefly took over power, which was occupied by Marathas in the early 18th century . The British and French fought for supremacy in the Carnatic Wars (1744–1763).
Attractions
The small town is best known for Fort Gingee . This extensive fortress complex consists of a walled area of around 7 km², which extends over the three hills Rajagiri , Kistnagiri and Chandraya Durg . There is a fortified citadel on Rajagiri Hill . Inside the fort complex there are monuments from the time of the changing rulers, including the Kalyana Mahal built in the Indo-Islamic style with its 27 m high tower as well as the Venkataramana temple built by the Hindu nayaks around 1550 and the Sadatullah Khan Mosque from 1718.
