Angus Thomas

Angus "Bangus" Thomas (* 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz bassist.

Life

Thomas grew up in Chicago-Englewood, began playing the trumpet as a child and taught himself to play the bass as an autodidact. He came to college through a football scholarship and later a music scholarship from Eastern Illinois University . There were further scholarships at the Berklee School of Music in Boston , at the Conservatory of Versailles and at the University of Illinois .

He became known in the late 1970s through his collaboration with Harvey Mandel and with the blues musician John Mayall , with whom he recorded the album No More Interviews . In 1981 he played an album with Jimmy Mack on RCA Records . With the Nicolas Simion Group he released Viaggio Imaginario in 1999 on Tutu Records. As an extremely versatile musician, he played from blues, rock, funk, jazz to classical in numerous genres.

In 1983 he started working with the group Combo Audio , with whom he recorded at EMI . In 1985 he had the opportunity to work with Miles Davis for seven months , twelve appearances in America and a European tour. The following year he toured with blues guitarist Albert King . At the end of the year, recordings with Peter Wolf were made at RCA . Furthermore, Thomas u. a. starring Stanley Clarke , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Eddie Harris , Johnny Winter and others. Since 2008 he has been a member of Philipp Fankhauser's Swiss band .

Thomas has lived in Vienna for years , where he teaches at the American Institute of Music, but also has an apartment in Switzerland. According to his own statements, he only travels to the United States for smaller professional assignments and projects, about three times a year. He was the first bass teacher from Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Jones .
