Giorgio Maria Rapparini (* 1660 in Bologna , † 1726 in Mannheim ) was an Italian court official, librettist , poet and draftsman at the Palatinate court.

Live and act

He grew up in poor conditions in Bologna, where he worked as a painter, was secretary of the city senate and came to the Palatinate court through his sister, a singer. From 1685–1716 he is documented in Düsseldorf as Italian language secretary and from 1710 also as court chamber councilor to Elector Johann Wilhelm . Most recently he lived in Mannheim , where he also died. His relative Maria Dorothea Rapparini married the electoral Palatinate privy councilor Joseph Fontanesi there in 1740 .

Giorgio Maria Rapparini already wrote libretti in Italy, for example for the opera “Berenice vendicatiua” by the sacred composer Giovanni Domenico Freschi , published in Padua in 1680, or for the opera “La Flavia” by his friend Giacomo Antonio Perti , published in Bologna in 1686 . At the Düsseldorf court, he wrote numerous other opera librettos, including works by Sebastiano Moratelli , Johann Hugo von Wilderer and Agostino Steffani . Several printed text books have been preserved from him. In 1709 he published the book “Le portrait du vrai mérite dans la personne serenissime de Monseigneur L'Electeur Palatin” on the elector's name day , a. a. with numerous medals designed and drawn by him. This work, a portrait of the elector and his environment, provides information about the artistic and cultural life at the Düsseldorf court at that time. With regard to the time of Johann Wilhelm, the historian Theodor Levin calls the book “the most direct and trustworthy source as far as artistic facts are concerned” .

One of his students in Bologna was the painter Donato Creti (1671–1749).
