Giorgio Puia (born March 8, 1938 in Gorizia ) is a former Italian football player and later coach . As an active player under contract with AC Turin for a long time and continued to participate in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico , he was barely able to achieve any notable success as a coach.

Career

Club career

Giorgio Puia was born in 1938 in Gorizia , a city in northeastern Italy, and began playing football for the local club Pro Gorizia. From here, the leaders of the transferred him US Triestina in the summer of 1958 to Trieste where Puia played in the following two years. With the US Triestina, the young defensive midfielder experienced first division football in his first professional game, but rose with the Trieste team, which started as a promoted team, as the penultimate of the Serie A in 1958/59 , from the Serie B , where he acted as a stopper for Triestina for one more season, but then changed the club.

From 1960 Giorgio Puia was under contract with Lanerossi Vicenza , then a constant first division team. In three years in Vicenza , placements in the midfield of the Serie A jumped out in all cases , most notably a seventh place in the 1962/63 season . In total, Giorgio Puia completed 81 games for Lanerossi Vicenza, scoring nineteen goals.

From 1963 to 1972 Giorgio Puia played nine years for AC Turin in Italy's elite league . With Torino the success in the Coppa Italia , the Italian soccer cup , was twice achieved . Coppa Italia was successful for the first time in 1967/68 when they won the title by taking first place two points ahead of AC Milan in a final round . While the league consistently placed in the upper midfield, but never a serious approach to the top of the table, they showed themselves victorious in the cup competition a second time, namely in the 1970/71 season . Here the team around players like Luciano Castellini , Giorgio Ferrini or Claudio Sala prevailed 5-3 on penalties against AC Milan and won Coppa Italia for the fourth time for AC Turin. At this point Giorgio Puia's career was already in its final phase, a year later he announced the end of his career at the age of 34. He had previously played 250 league games for AC Turin in nine years and scored ten goals.

After the end of his active career as a football player, Giorgio Puia became a coach, although he only worked in this role for a short time and in the deep amateur area. He coached the teams of ASD Calcio Ivrea , AS Biellese and the US Latina for only a few months . In 1984 he had his last coaching position to date in Latina .

National team

Between 1962 and 1970 Giorgio Puia made a total of seven appearances in the Italian national football team . A goal he did not succeed here. From national coach Ferruccio Valcareggi he was appointed to the Italian squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico , but was not used during the tournament. The Italian team reached the final of this World Cup after defeating Germany in the famous game of the century in the semifinals . In the final, however, they lost to Brazil .
