Georgios "Giorgos" Amerikaos ( Greek Γιώργος Αμερικάνος ; * December 21, 1942 in Greece ; † October 7, 2013 ibid) was a Greek basketball player and coach.

Career

Amerika is one of the most successful basketball players who have ever played at AEK Athens , which signed him from the XAN Nikeas. With the Athens team he was a total of six times Greek champion (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970) and was twice the most successful basket hunter in the league (1965, 1968).

As captain, he led the club to the semifinals of the European Cup for the 1965/66 season and to win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1967/68, which was the first international title of a Greek club team. In the final on April 4, 1968 against Slavia Prague , he marked 29 points.

At the end of his career he moved to Apollon Patras which he later trained. Under him, the team rose to the A1 Ethniki for the first time in 1979/80 . For the 1986/87 season he took over the AEK Athens.

National team

For the Greek national team he played 68 games and threw 1,076 points. He took part in the European Championships in 1961 and 1965 and was Greece's most successful lay-up on both occasions . He also took part in the Mediterranean Games in 1967 and four times in the Balkan Championships (1962, 1964, 1967, 1969) and in two Pro Olympic advanced tournaments of FIBA in 1960 and 1964.
