Giovanni Andrea Bussi

Giovanni Andrea (de) Bussi , also Ghjuvan Andria di Bussi , (born July 14, 1417 in Vigevano , † February 4, 1475 in Rome ) was an Italian bishop , humanist and first librarian of the papal library .

Life

In 1451 Bussi entered the service of Pope Nikolaus V. From 1458 to 1464 he was papal secretary and close confidante of Cardinal Nikolaus von Kues .

In 1461 he was appointed Bishop of Accia in Corsica by Pope Pius II , and in 1464 as Vicar General "in spiritualibus et pontificalibus" of the Archdiocese of Genoa, due to the incapacity of his bishop. In July 1466 he was appointed Bishop of Aléria . In 1471/72 he was appointed first librarian and secretary of the papal library. He was succeeded in 1475 by Bartolomeo Platina .

Bussi published numerous writings by classical Latin authors for the printers Arnold Pannartz and Konrad Sweynheim since 1468, e.g. B. 1469 Livius Andronicus and the Noctes Atticae by Aulus Gellius , 1470 the Historia naturalis by Pliny the Elder. Elderly, then Virgil, Ovid and Titus Livius ' Ab urbe condita , and enriched the Vatican library with many classical manuscripts.
