Giovanni Bovio

Giovanni Bovio (born February 6, 1837 in Trani , † April 15, 1903 in Naples ) was an Italian philosopher and politician of the Partito Repubblicano Italiano .

Life

Giovanni Bovio studied law, completed his habilitation in Naples as a private lecturer in legal philosophy and was appointed associate professor there in 1879 and full professor in 1892. Since 1876 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy , where he made himself felt through his radical views and eloquence. While on the one hand he joined the Irredenta , of which he became vice-president, he attacked the Pope and the Church violently and offended even the left. He took a great part in the agitation for universal suffrage and the abolition of the guarantee laws. He published several esteemed legal works. Best known is the ingenious writing Uomini e tempi (Naples 1879), which illuminated the political situation in Italy with impartiality and sharpness.
