Early years

Pope Pius VI , his nephew, elevated him to cardinal in pectore on May 29, 1775 and published his name on September 11, 1775. On December 18 of that year he was given the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo as cardinal priest .
Giovanni Carlo Bandi had the Imola Cathedral built. In 1782 he hosted Pope Pius VI. on his trip to Vienna, on this occasion the Pope consecrated the newly built cathedral.
He died on March 23, 1784 in his episcopal city of Imola and was buried there in the cathedral he had built.
