Giovanni Girolamo Saccheri (born September 5, 1667 in Sanremo [today: Italy ], † October 25, 1733 in Milan ) was a Jesuit , philosopher , theologian and mathematician .

biography

Saccheri entered the Jesuit order in 1685 . From 1690 he studied philosophy and theology as a Jesuit in Milan, where he also attended lectures in mathematics from the mathematician and Jesuit Tommaso Ceva .

From 1694 to 1697 he taught philosophy at the University of Turin , from 1697 until the end of his life philosophy and theology at the University of Pavia . In 1699 he was also given the chair of mathematics in Pavia, also until his death.

Saccheri made important early studies on non-Euclidean geometry (in Euclides from Omni Naevo Vindicatus 1733, see Saccheri-Viereck ), in which he tried to prove the parallel postulate , as well as on mathematical logic ( Logica Demonstrativa, 1697; see Consequentia mirabilis ).
