Tommaso Ceva (born December 20, 1648 near Milan ; † February 3, 1736 there ) was an Italian Jesuit , poet and mathematician . He is the brother of the Italian mathematician Giovanni Ceva (1647 or 1648–1734, theorem of Ceva ).

Life

Tommaso Ceva entered the Jesuit order in 1663 and taught at several colleges of the order until the end of his life. Among other things, he wrote the Latin poem Puer Jesus , which he himself wanted to be seen as a comic heroic poem .

His writing De natura gravium (Milan 1669 ) was the first to make Newton's theory of gravitation known in Italy and contributed to its spread.

In his Opuscula mathematica (Milan 1699 ) he presented several mathematical studies, such as the division of the angle . A curve he constructed for this purpose is known today as the Cycloid or Trisektrix by Ceva . Ceva also invented an instrument for angle division.
