Giovanni Pugliese

Giovanni Pugliese (born November 11, 1914 in Turin , † March 28, 1995 in Milan ) was an Italian legal scholar , legal historian and university professor.

Live and act

Pugliese finished his legal studies in 1935 with a tesi di laurea on Roman civil law. This was followed by in- depth studies at the University of Rome until 1938, during which time he completed his doctorate and habilitation under the supervision of Emilio Albertario and Pietro de Francisci . He then held a chair at the University of Sassari until 1940 . From 1940 he was first associate professor and later full professor at the University of Macerata , from 1941 at the University of Trieste . In 1947 he moved to the University of Genoa for a year before taking up a chair at the University of Milan in 1948 . In 1960 he accepted a professorship at the University of Rome, where he held a chair in Roman law until his retirement. At all of his teaching stations, he taught and researched primarily on Roman law, but also on the applicable Italian civil and civil procedural law. Pugliese was also a visiting professor at the Universities of Padua , Istanbul and Louisiana State University . Pugliese was a member of the Academies of Science of Rome , Turin, Modena and Milan and an honorary doctorate from the law faculties of the Universities of Bordeaux and Göttingen . In 1989 he was the first legal historian to receive the Humboldt Research Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation .

Pugliese dealt in his comprehensive, almost 3000 printed pages comprehensive work primarily with Roman law, but also with modern Italian law. Both areas again focus on procedural law. There are contributions to almost every area of ​​Roman law.
