Giovanni Santi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Santi (* around 1435 in Colbordolo di Urbino , † August 1, 1494 in Urbino ) was an Italian painter of the Umbrian school and the father of Raphael .

He was active in Urbino and the surrounding area, probably as a court painter to the Montefeltros . Influenced by Pietro Perugino and Melozzo da Forlì , he was a rather simple and insignificant painter. Only the fact that he is Raphael's father saved him from oblivion. He is best known for his religious pictures and Madonnas. After 1490 he is said to have portrayed Margrave Francesco II Gonzaga and his sister Elisabetta in Mantua . He is also known for his rhyming chronicle, dedicated to Guidobaldo I. da Montefeltro , in which he also pays tribute to well-known contemporary painters.
