Giovanni Strüver

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Strüver (born January 23, 1842 as Johannes Karl Theodor Strüver in Braunschweig , † February 21, 1915 in Rome ) was an Italian mineralogist and paleontologist of German descent .

Strüver was an assistant to Quintino Sella at the engineering school in Florence and from 1873 professor of mineralogy at the University of Rome (La Sapienza) and head of its mineralogical collection, which he collected through his own collecting activities (especially in Lazio, on Elba and in the Piedmontese Alps ) and expanded by 10,000 copies through purchases. Almost all minerals known at the time (896 of 900) and almost all Italian meteorite finds were represented in the collection.

In 1874 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1900 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Strüver is considered to be the first to describe the minerals sellaite and gastaldite . The latter, however, turned out to be identical to Glaucophan in later investigations .

Honors

In 1903 he became an honorary member of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland .

The mineral Strüverite is named after him by his student Ferruccio Zambonini (1880–1932).
